Lawrence Hennigan from the traders association said "It's great to see the local traders digging deep to help provide a Christmas treat for the local children.  It has been a bit of an annual tradition now for a number of years and no credit crunch was going to stop us putting it on.  Everyone looks forward to this family friendly event, it is one of the highlights of the year and gets everyone ready for Christmas.  It is important that everyone supports each other during these challenging times.  I do not know of any other area that provides such a treat for its youngsters, but then again Levenshulme likes to be different."

Policing A6 Shops and Businesses

Your local Neighbourhood Policing Team is based at Gorton Police Station. A recent change in structure has resulted in beat officers being specifically allocated to their own areas to address local issues. These issues include anti social behaviour, criminal damage, burglaries and a variety of other matters. The team also works in close contact with local Councillors and other agencies through meetings and community events.

Some of you will already have met some of these officers, but for your information the following staff cover the area of Stockport Road in which your business is situated.

The District Centre Plan for Levenshulme

Local Traders Meeting / Workshop
Tuesday 15th July at St Mary’s Parish Hall
at 12.00-2.00pm

A Presentation and then Discussion in Regard to:

“The District Centre Plan for Levenshulme”

Since February 2008 the city council regeneration team and their team of consultants have been working to develop a District Centre Plan for Levenshulme. This plan will outline the objectives for improving the area over the next 10 to 15 years and will set out a strategy for the revitalisation of the district centre in terms of its:
• Retail offer
• Public realm
• Community, civil and leisure facilities
• Public transport and accessibility

The team of consultants have completed their initial research into the District Centre and have produced a baseline report setting out the key characteristics of the area along with the opportunities for development. This work has been overseen by a Steering Group consisting of local Councillors and senior Council officers.

They are now working on possible approaches to the future development of the District Centre and want to include the views of key stakeholders at this stage. Feedback from the stakeholder workshops will be used to shape a draft plan which will form the basis of the full public consultation in the autumn. We would therefore like to invite you as a local trader to attend the workshop on the above date.

The workshop will take place at:
St Mary’s Parish Hall
next to St Mary’s Church on Elbow Street.

I would be grateful if you could confirm you availability for the appropriate workshop.
I look forward to hearing from you. If you would like any further information about the consultation process, or if you need anything to enable you to attend the event, please contact:

Levenshulme Traders bring Christmas cheer to local children

Traders from Levenshulme joined forces with Manchester City council to provide a free outdoor Christmas party for over a thousand local people on Thursday 22 November.

Close to five hundred children queued up with their parents to receive a free present from Father Christmas in his grotto on the village Green and see the official switch of the areas Christmas lights.

Taking part in the community celebration was the Deputy Lord Mayor of THE CITY OF MANCHESTER Cllr Mavis Smitheman who was presented with a bouquet of flowers from local florists Bridgettes.

She was ably assisted by Levenshulme Boxing heroes John & Joe Murray plus ‘Moonchester’ from Manchester City Football club and ‘Fred the Red’ from Manchester United Football club.

The boxers and football mascots were inundated with request for autographs and photographs by the audience.

Jonathan Floyd from the Levenshulme Traders association said “It was a fantastic family celebration, it proves that in terms of community spirit – Levenshulme is second to none.

Levenshulme Christmas Lights I would like to thank all the local traders in the area who have dug deep in their pockets to help fund this wonderful event to launch our Christmas celebrations in the area.

We are very grateful to the city council and our local councillors for helping us stage this annual event.”

Entertainment was provided by Joe Casserly of the Full Irish programme on ALL FM 96.9 and Levenshulme High School’s choir.

Local councillor John Commons said “It was great to see the city ‘United’ with the premiership football mascots putting their football allegiances aside to join in the festive fun.

The young boxers were a credit to their ‘Sport’ taking time out of their busy training schedule. The youngsters were delighted to see their heroes and it really made their Christmas.

We were very honoured that the Deputy Lord Mayor could perform the official switch on she provided a touch of glamour to the proceedings.”
